England to Scotland via train
12 August 2008, 5:04 pm
The weather here has been typical for a summer in England but has been driving me nuts. Sunny outside one minute raining harder than you’ve ever seen sideways the next then sunny 30 minutes after that. Because of this I wasn’t able to iron out a beach trip to Cornwall. I was able to work [...]...

Foreign Beggars
10 August 2010, 4:48 am
There was this MC on stage at the end of the last night of Sonar at first he was shouting a bit and I wasn't too keen; then he started bubbling, riding the beats. He was brilliant and I said so to Claire & TomDodd who informed me that he was Pavan from Foreign Beggars (who I'd sort of heard of); and that he'd played their night Plat Du Jour a few times. So I grabbed a couple of photos of him for them which meant luring him to the front of the stage with a couple of come here hand gestures; ...

What a nice bloke. I'm consistently in awe of his creative genius and this video takes it to another level (although - with no offence to Grevious Angel who provided the soundtrack- I personally ...

Reading Willy Ronis' Ce Jour La (in French I must add!)- beautiful black & white photos of Paris and other parts of Europe; they inspire me to go out on the streets more often capturing. Whilst I am largely a candid photographer of the same school of thought as Ronis (I guess) I still have a desire to make portraits yet still haven't gotten over my dislike / fear (whatever it is) of approaching strangers and asking for photos as for example Oleg Tolstoy (thanks to Foreign Beggars for linkin...

Uncertain Tin Foil
6 April 2013, 9:01 pm
This roll of tin foil is a veritable joy to work with, due to its indecision regarding the nature of its unraveling. At times it sprouts ribbons, shiny ribbons of joy. I am an avid fan of George R. R. Martin's series Game of Thrones (both the books and the show). I have recently purchased a replica of the Iron Throne as seen in the television show, and need a partner to play out an elaborate fanatsy. Haunted 1960s coffee grinder
5 April 2013, 3:14 pm
Relic burr coffee grinder from the 1960's. Available for immediate pickup. FREE! with caveats. . . 1. The finest setting is still pretty coarse, but if you use a French press, you're in hipster coffee heaven. 2. It's haunted. Take a picture using Hipstamatic or Instagram in a low lit room with the grinder to your right, in line with and roughly level with your heart, and a ghostly image of Timothy Leary will appear in the frame. Also, I've woken up several nights to find the grinder had mov...

Did you leave a prosthetic leg on the bus this morning? - w4m
25 March 2013, 2:34 pm
I found a prosthetic leg wearing a Lucchese brand cowboy boot on the bus this morning. I'm not sure what brand the leg is, but it's only the shin and foot portion and it's not mechanical looking. Rather, it looks semi-real--almost like it could be from a giant plastic doll or something. I hope you don't mind, but I went ahead and tried the boot on. Magnificent! At first I wondered why a prosthetic leg user would have purchased such a comfy boot. Then I figured that you probably have anothe...

Burrito Inflation: Cheaper Than A Lawyer

He fired a BB gun at employees, escaped without the burritos, and barricaded himself in a hotel room with an assault rifle. Repeated for emphasis: without the burritos. T-Rex Taqueria had just opened. Maybe they didn't have their act together. My burrito took a while to make and somehow the hot sauce was left out. The wrap was a little messy and ingredient distribution was poor. And they only had black beans. While waiting I did enjoy the decor: an eclectic mixture of fossil logos and vintage photos of professional wrestlers. If I were in the area I'd go back, maybe even regularly. But T-Rex is no destination....
Welcome To T-Rex Taqueria
4 February 2009, 8:00 am
Burrito speed eating rivals John Liu and Sheb both brought T-Rex Taqueria to my attention mere days after its opening. Located on Cypress Street near the Brookline Hills T stop and Brookline High School, T-Rex is mighty close to competition at Boca Grande, Baja Betty's, and Anna's Taqueria. Expect nothing less from the self proclaimed king of taquerias. View Larger Map My bet is they're going after the open campus foot traffic of the high school students and municipal workers at the nearb...

Grateful DeadThursday, June 4, 1970Fillmore West - San Francisco, CAAudience Recording Few and far between are complete audience tapes of the Grateful Dead in 1970 which include the acoustic opening set, the New Riders of the Purple Sage middle set, and the electric Dead closing set. Fewer still are those that sound as good as any AUD tape could in that year. Here, however, is just such a tape. Pass through the membrane. Be the membrane. There never was a membrane. You're back at a Grateful Dead show. Under Eternity Blue - Soul Funk
30 July 2011, 8:55 am
The twelfth installment of the Under Eternity Blue radio program hits the Internet airwaves this weekend on Spirit Plants Radio with two show times: Saturday, July 30 at 11pm EST, and Sunday, July 31 at 11am EST. It's been a scorcher of a summer so far, and nothing reflects the heat quite as nicely as Soul Funk - that pocked genre of music from the late 60s to very early 70s that was born out of James Brown and had an unmistakable imprint of the dawning of everything we know...

GRATEFUL DEADSaturday, May 25, 1974Campus Stadium, UC Santa Barbara -- Goleta, CAAudience & Soundboard Recordings Judged across the entire 30 year span of Grateful Dead music, 1973 and 1974 possess tremendous similarities. However, when viewed in detail they reveal stark differences at many levels. The explorative playing style in 1974 has an aggressive and intentional bent. The band was pushing in ‘74, whereas in 1973 things seemed more about open discovery. By 1974 the dis...

16 February 2011, 7:14 pm
GRATEFUL DEAD Monday, March 9, 1981 Madison Square Garden - New York, NY Audience Recording The maturation process for a Deadhead tape collector is a very interesting thing indeed. Whether it's in the way one slowly develops an ear to "hear" a year from just a few seconds of a song, or gains the ability to call a tune long before it starts based off of random between-song noodling happening on stage; with more listening comes the perception of subtleties and nuances which can elude other l...

The eleventh installment of the Under Eternity Blue radio program hits the Internet airwaves this weekend on Spirit Plants Radio with two show times: Saturday, December 11 at 8pm PST, and Sunday, December 12 at 7am PST. Spirit Plants Radio asked DJs to give this week's show some level of a seasonal theme. During the busy holiday season, this episode opts to explore the solitude and peace that may be found on a late night walk in Winter. The show attempts to paint a musical landscape to acc...
The Music Never Stopped
26 November 2010, 7:30 am
We as Deadhead's are typically a musically sophisticated bunch. Most of us are hard wired to enjoy music deeply, and often our tastes expand far and wide. As I've mentioned here from time to time, the Dead only fill about 10% of my musical universe on a daily or weekly basis; often far less than even that. In many years of pushing my musical horizons, I have always looked for resources in the sphere of "all music" that can do for me what I try to do here in the Grateful Dead sphere - take my ha...

Grime In The Dancehall Mix (2013 Remaster)
13 February 2013, 2:39 pm
From the desk of Mr Grievous Angel: Remember that huge mix of dancehall-infused grime and grimey dancehall me and John Eden did a few years ago for the Blogariddims Podcast? Well, I’ve done a new master of it so it sounds louder, clearer and better than ever before. Maximum listening pleasure as well as a unique [...]...
Spooky: Grimey Bashment
13 February 2013, 2:11 pm
Me and Paul used Spooky’s 2005 Joyride riddim rework on our Grime In The Dancehall mix (more of which in a minute). Seems like us, he can’t leave that vibe alone. This snuck out at the end of 2012, a pitched down version of the riddim used by Beenie Man for “Who Am I?”: Get [...]...
February updates
7 February 2013, 5:49 am
1. SPATIAL INTERVIEWED BY JOHN EDEN An interview I did with Hackney-based producer Spatial is now published exclusively and for the first time at The Liminal. This piece was originally intended for issue 5 of Woofah, but has been fully updated. (It’s the last outstanding thing I wrote for Woofah, which makes me a bit smiley [...]...
Ten years of Blogging
18 January 2013, 3:00 pm
Ten years ago today I signed on at Blogger* and kicked things off with posts on an article by Greg Mario Whitfield about Bass Culture and a new issue of Datacide Magazine. Paul Meme and I had been avidly following Simon Reynolds’ Blissout website for a few years and had noted his move to Blogger [...]...

Turbulent Times #9 is selling steadily and is now also available from these recommended stockists: Norman Records Turgid Animal I know that the cost of overseas postage is putting some people off, so you might want to order a couple of things along with your zine and reduce the p&p charges that way. “You’ve done a 48-page fanzine about noise? WHY?” – Paul Meme, Grievous Angel “Been devouring it this weekend. Hollertronix 10: The Partysquad – ‘Murderer (Diplo & JAYOU Remix)’ + more JAYOU Remixes
17 December 2009, 11:51 am
R.I.P. Hollertronix series, that club staple borne in Philly by Diplo and Low B that, in its lifetime, has seen the pair rise from small time basement collaborators and underground party hustlers to major label players and arena rockers. It helped introduced the world to Bmore and Balie Funk music and let DJs know it [...]...
Audio Bullys: ‘Kiss The Sky’
17 December 2009, 10:02 am
London’s Audio Bullys never fail! This tune is massive in the playlist. I love the Bullys because they always have A-game production and good, catchy, songwriting with signature delivery. They can do it all! The new heat is ‘Kiss The Sky’, a big room electro house stomper—and def. a mad reapeater since the Audio Bullys [...]...
Ian Brown: ‘Just Like You (The Prodigy Remix) plus hella old UNKLE colabos
17 December 2009, 8:28 am
Credit: Perou Now, one of ‘Toof’s favorite things is seeing two seemingly different favorite things commingling & fraternizing into one super-favorite thing. I’m speaking about favorite thing Ian Brown, vocalist of seminal English band The Stone Roses (‘87-’95) and favorite thing, The Prodigy, gods of industrial techno (with broadening horizons). The two got together on Ian [...]...
Dan Sena: ‘Panther’ plus remixes of Scanners & Yeah Yeah Yeahs
17 December 2009, 4:53 am
Credit: 1984 Photo O.C.’s Dan Sena, former hardcore vocalist in Bullet Train to Vegas, Dim Mak alumni and lynch-pin in the Orange County dance music scene with Busywork (which, was run and residented alongside our buddy and featured artist, Clifford Lidell—formerly CASIO), has something for you to hear under a discoball. We’ve got a couple fresh Dan [...]...
Lil Wayne: ‘Drop The World (feat. Eminem)’ & ‘Get A Life’ from ‘Rebirth’ album. Remixes from Flying Lotus & Stenchman
17 December 2009, 12:48 am
New Orleans’ MC champion Lil Wayne has an infectious one with Detroit underground-com-pop-raper Eminem on ‘Drop The World’. Eminem’s frequent pop-parody raps have made him more pop-than-pop like a US Weekly magazine—but still, the man’s got talent and now-and-then pulls off something really special that reminds me why I used to excuse myself on going [...]...
Lupe Fiasco: Empire Strikes Back: A Love Story
15 December 2009, 10:12 pm
Lupe Fiasco, skater boy champion of Chicago hip hop, released a 22 minute long mixtape recently titled ‘Enemy of the State: A Love Story’. On it, Lupe pulls some ol’ Ice Cube shit jackin’-for-beats move. But the new twist is that the contemporary MC, Lupe sources beats from the likes of Radiohead, instead of sticking [...]...
My Cat Drinks Tap Water
6 December 2009, 12:16 am
My Cat Drinks Tap Water are a noisy lot of young men from Queensland, Australia. They make hardcore-ish electronic-ish lo-fi music and, obviously, have an acute sense of subtle observational humor (my cat usually washes down his cheezburger with tap water too). My Cat Drinks Tap Water, or MCDTW—for usability purposes—have captured a sound similar to [...]...
Kite In The Air: ‘Magic Marker’
22 November 2009, 9:25 pm
I’d like to put a little more kindling on a group that I’d like to see catch a fire: Kite In The Air. This kindling goes atop the modest pile started by MOKB and Sheena Beaston about six months ago right after the release of their debut self-titled ep. Kite In The Air is collaboration between [...]...
Rubix: ‘Baiser Sur La Disco (Rubix Refix)’
22 November 2009, 7:09 pm
Rubix brand disco house is hot. This Amsterdam, Noord-Holland based DJ/Producer is catching major buzz, and from a little chit-chat, seems to be a nice bro to boot. He caught my attention with ‘Baiser Sur La Disco’ and the entertaining video edit found here on YouTube, put together by Tom Waist of HOMEWORK. Under the wing [...]...
Aphex Twin vs. Chevy One – Dublicker
20 November 2009, 1:48 am
We’re down for this white-label. There’s charm in the no-name, no-label no-BS tracks; they’re perfectly content to exist in obscurity: no flashiness, no waving of banners. It’s just a track to find and appreciate on it’s own merit. Well here’s one, which I, admittedly, gave a listen to because it’s obviously a dubstep remix (because [...]...

Babe Rainbow
29 November 2010, 10:34 pm
Babe Rainbow is Cameron Reed from Vancouver, BC. He makes slow, sludgy dubstep (or "doomstep"). Dirty, fuzzy synths sound like they're being pulled apart over bass-heavy beats. Here's a video with a small preview of the track "Care" from his debut EP "Shaved," out now on Warp Records: Here's the title track from "Shaved," along with the official video:Download it here: Shaved (via Clumsy & Shy)Another track from "Shaved":Awesome Lindsay Lohan cover from the "Let Me Shine For You" comp out...

Wise Blood
8 November 2010, 4:07 pm
Little is known about Wise Blood, except that his name is Christopher Laufman, and the few short, hazy lo-fi pop tunes he's been posting online this year have earned him a lot of attention. His songs are blurry collages based around samples with his own faded, soulful vocals riding on top. In a "Rising" article, he told Pitchfork, "I want to sign a big contract and take over pop music...I think it could [work out]. Pretty confident." Expect big things in the future. He just released a new song,...

DJs: they like to "take you on a journey," or so the DJ cliche goes. But what kind of journey? It's a good question and one I suspect many DJs would struggle to articulately spell out to you. Perhaps then a picture would tell the story better. I forget when I first thought about it, but for a while its been in the back of my head that you could plot the different types of DJ sets as graphs,...

The Polish Ambassador
15 February 2011, 12:17 pm
The amount of crap I still get in the resonator inbox is overwhelming (to say the least). For every list I unsub from, three more popup from dodgy “email marketing services” spouting off PR releases for music so unrelated to anything we’ve ever done here. That said: I’m trying to weed out the crap and [...]...
DJ Set @ Union Hall This Saturday + Some Sick Acid Tracks
8 October 2010, 10:49 am
The Hackers 15th Anniversary party was… EPPIICCCCCC. Check out the photos Via The Culture Of Me.. I had a blast deejaying, played tons of dusty vinyl and even went so far as to make my costume using custom stencils (check it [yes that's trixie in the background with glowsticks --I couldn't resist]) As a followup [...]...
You know what’s crazy?
22 September 2010, 1:12 pm
When the writer-formerly-known-as-shaun-bateman gets to share his irrational love for music and artists (in this case: WITCH HOUSE) on a nationally “syndicated” online magazine: http://flavorwire.com/118771/haunted-a-witch-house-primer Much love yo, </choyce hacks>...

Secret Panda Society: We want in on your secret.
21 May 2013, 8:15 am
Rob Stern and Joe Benny of the Secret Panda Society met up at Audio Engineering School and came from two different backgrounds: EDM/Hip Hop vs. live bands/hip hop. The Secret Panda Society was born out of a combined interest in the new bass music that was infecting the EDM scene. Smart decision because these fellas no doubt have something big to offer to this particular industry with talents in all the many genres of bass/dance music....
Bacon & Buns of Steel… Yummy Stuff from Whacka.
21 May 2013, 7:27 am
"Bacon is good for me." Thus begins Whacka's 2-step style bacon anthem, complete with thick bass, thick brass, a groovy as hell bassline. Overall, “Bacon / Buns of Steel” is a bouncy and fun followup to Whacka’s debut single “Yup / Digital Love.” Simplify is also releasing a free download with this package of “Digital Love,” and you can get the digital love right here....
Alistair Albrecht’s “Want You Back” – House Jam!
20 May 2013, 9:22 am
Alistair Albrecht never fails to deliver the absolute best house music jams, and his new track out today "Want You Back" is no exception. A catchy melody and and elegantly done yet fever-inducing drop make this one a keeper. Though both remixes are solid - Luna Moor's remix is a techy take on the single and Dennis Van Der Geest's is a slightly more progressive take - for us Alistair's original remains on top as far as dance potential and overall quality go....
Benzel + King Henry? Audio Sex.
20 May 2013, 8:07 am
As anyone from NYC's underground can tell you, this past winter BenZel has been at the forefront of the scene. Their track "Fallin' Love" was all the proof anyone needed (King Henry's take on the track joins an impressive list of remixes, including Cashmere Cat and Velour) to the point where there is little argument over whether the two Japanese producers have earned their place among the city's electronic royalty....
