23 June 2009, 8:05 pm
If you didnt notice, I was incredibly excited for the Scion House Party last Wednesday at The Roxy. Joker being one of my favorite producers right now, 12th Planet really hammers that Funktion One soundsystem, and I had not heard of anyone ever actually getting a chance to see Zomby play live. After [...]...

DJ Craze June Mix
10 June 2009, 12:15 am
I have said it before and I will say it again, Craze is the best dj on the planet. I have followed him closely from the DMC days, Drum & Bass, touring with Kanye West to today. If this latest mix is any indication as to the direction of the new label, Slow Roast, then [...]...

Play Me Records - Label Launch
31 May 2009, 8:08 pm
Play Me Records is the brainchild of our girl Reid Speed and Mark Subsonik of Drum & Bass imprint, Subsonik Sound. The two first met through drum & bass but teamed up over a shared love of slick pop hooks, twisted drum programming and phat nasty subs. Now, they are proud to bring a battalion [...]...

England to Scotland via train
12 August 2008, 5:04 pm
The weather here has been typical for a summer in England but has been driving me nuts. Sunny outside one minute raining harder than you’ve ever seen sideways the next then sunny 30 minutes after that. Because of this I wasn’t able to iron out a beach trip to Cornwall. I was able to work [...]...

3 July 2009, 5:55 pm
The review:"Cook’s installation covers a wide area and I was impressed by the dispersed nature of the work. For example I was greeted at East Croydon station by a friendly bureaucrat who informed me that, despite Croydon technically being in Zone 5 of London’s travelcard system, my Oystercard was not valid there and that I would have to pay a twenty quid penalty fare."Read the rest here:http://www.uncarved.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/suburbanpress.jpgMy reply to the review:Dear John ...
Devas Youth Centre
2 July 2009, 3:25 pm
DevasI was most pleased to be asked to take some photographs of the young people on the Music Production Course at Battersea's 'bangin' youth centre. The course is run and taught by my old friends Matt and Dave (aka Blue Movies), themselves long-time, seriously talented musicians. I hadn't heard any Devas music since my last visit a year ago, and upon arrival recognised only a couple of the young people, namely the ladies Dvyne and Cyclone, so didn't know what to expect of the performance late...

27 May 2009, 4:05 pm
Whoo-hoo Seattle, the sun is out! Let's discuss a few things before you fumble with swapping the unused ski rack for the unused bike rack on the Subaru. So yes, you've noticed the sun is out, and hey!- maybe it would be cool to to some bike riding. Let's keep in mind that the sun came out of all 600,000 of us, so for the most part, you're not the only one who noticed. Please remember that when you walk into my shop on a bright, sunny Saturday morning. It will save you from looking like a ...
California's Gay Marriage Ban: Disgraceful
26 May 2009, 8:37 pm
First let me say I am NOT a mormon. Not everyone in Utah is mormon, in fact the percentage of Mormon to non Mormon is gradually declining as more folks move in from places like California, Nevada, Arizona and the Snowbelt states. So, while the Mormon church does still have some degree of clout here, to boycott Utah thinking you are boycotting the Mormon church, is kind of like the reverse of the Christians telling their congregations that if they go to San Francisco on vacation they are suppor...

Cow poop

He works at Jiffy Mart and doesn't have the time to figure out what to do with all of it. I work too, and I dread coming home each night only to see the cows have pooped another mountain. Please, if you know what can be done about this situation, please let us know as we are at wits end. The stench is becoming unbearable here and I can hardly eat my sal...
Free couch, if you can bend time and/or space
25 May 2009, 2:56 pm
I have a free couch for anyone who can get it back out of my room. It's a comfy couch, cool stripe velvet in great shape, impossibly uncomfortable sleeper, but otherwise easily worth $50-75 bucks in Craigslist land. So why am I listing in for free? Because I am pretty sure it is physically impossible to remove this thing from my second story bedroom down the narrow hallway, down the narrower staircase and out the front door of my little Victorian duplex. How did we get it up here in the fir...

25 May 2009, 12:15 am
You know, I was almost interested until you emerged from the bathroom looking and behaving like you had just intravenously taken in enough red bull to cause an entire kindergarten class's heads to collectively explode. It was funny watching you act all horny and rub up on everyone in the hopes of getting someone to either a.) buy you some more fruity mixed drinks or b.) do one better and score you more coke... The latter of which being super out there, seeing as how you had a seemingly never-...

I have been looking for a new place and I have noticed a few things about the rentals listed under "apt/housing" which are making me all sad due to the amount of time I waste searching the ads, emailing people, phoning them or looking at the places for rent. 1. Please do not be all snarky with me when I ask about pets. If your ad doesn't say "no pets," please don't assume I know that you don't allow pets. If you don't allow pets, please put it in your ad. Location Location I'm Stuck Here
7 February 2009, 8:15 am
T-Rex Taqueria had just opened. Maybe they didn't have their act together. My burrito took a while to make and somehow the hot sauce was left out. The wrap was a little messy and ingredient distribution was poor. And they only had black beans. While waiting I did enjoy the decor: an eclectic mixture of fossil logos and vintage photos of professional wrestlers. If I were in the area I'd go back, maybe even regularly. But T-Rex is no destination....
Welcome To T-Rex Taqueria
4 February 2009, 8:00 am
Burrito speed eating rivals John Liu and Sheb both brought T-Rex Taqueria to my attention mere days after its opening. Located on Cypress Street near the Brookline Hills T stop and Brookline High School, T-Rex is mighty close to competition at Boca Grande, Baja Betty's, and Anna's Taqueria. Expect nothing less from the self proclaimed king of taquerias. View Larger Map My bet is they're going after the open campus foot traffic of the high school students and municipal workers at the nearb...
Airport Burrito, Airport Prices
27 January 2009, 7:36 am
Don't get me wrong, I was thrilled to be able to order a burrito at Logan airport's Terminal C. That counts for a lot, but that's where the thrill ends. I went with the steak classic burrito from Currito, add guacamole. As a long time adversary of the cilantro lime rice, I wasn't expecting much. Expectation correct. The Currito burrito was strictly average in every way but one. $8.33 for a burrito. Wow. I didn't have my scale with me, but the FDR must have been a record low. See also: ...
Welcome To Currito
24 January 2009, 5:05 pm
Currito is a national franchise chain operating in nine states: Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, and Washington. The origins of Currito were difficult to track down, even for a sneaky Internet hombre (me). Founding: Headquartered in Ohio, Currito's first year of operation was difficult to glean. Their website was written in Latin as recently as July of 2007. No, Currito does not predate English; websites are often mocked up with Latin b...
Take A Break From The Books
17 January 2009, 9:39 am
Mr. Fink has a pretty serious workload in grad school. Fortunately, he lives close enough to Olecito to walk over for a tortilla time out. A couple years ago, Mr. Fink showed me The (Big) Enchilada. Now it was my turn. For $5.50 we each picked up an Olecito burrito that comes with guacamole and a side of chips and salsa. Take a break from Inman legend Punjabi Dhaba and check out Olecito. Definitely worth it....
Welcome To Olecito
14 January 2009, 8:20 am
Located across the street from its upscale parent, Olé, Olecito is much more my style. They serve just the basics: tacos, tortas, burritos, and quesadilas. Like the style, the pricing is also much more my flavor. Olecito opened mid 2008, but Burrito Blog needlessly delayed reviewing this little Inman Square eatery. If you're headed in that direction, make sure you don't go too late; Olecito closes at 10 on weekends and 9 during the week. View Larger Map...

Not much surprises me anymore. But an highly unusual wedding in a town called Normal, Illinois at a Taco Bell gets the job done. Thanks to Nancy for the tip. Check out the full story, Customers continue to order tacos and burritos as vows are exchanged. I especially like this part:Caragh Brooks, 21, of Australia, met Paul Brooks, 30, on an Internet dating Web site. They already had the same last name. And"It's appropriate," groom Paul Brooks said. "It's an offbeat relationship."No kidding....
Grateful Dead Listening
The Ones That Get Away
29 June 2009, 5:26 am
This time of year always gets me thinking about its significance related to the Grateful Dead’s output in the year 1973. I’ve well documented my proclivity for everything “summer ‘73” in numerous posts, and as the last ten days of June approached, I even planned to honor certain favorite highlights in homage to this favorite time of my favorite year. While the Dead seemed to lock into their summer ‘73 vibe early in June at RFK stadium, the three show run at Universal City, CA holds a...
The Quiet Allure Of Audience Tapes
20 June 2009, 6:47 am
Upon launching the Grateful Dead Listening Guide I brought up a somewhat understated intention that went beyond the overarching goal of helping folks navigate the endless choices of Dead concert recordings online. Early on I came clean on the point that I was particularly fond of audience recordings, and that in years past I had devoted much of my time and energy to spreading the word of audience tapes and the joys within. There was little denying that throughout my ongoing ramblings there would...
Under Eternity Blue - Psychedelic Folk
20 June 2009, 6:23 am
The next installment of Under Eternity Blue hits the airwaves this weekend. For those that don't know, I started a podcast side project for an online radio station (Spirit Plants Radio) a couple of months ago. Loosely structured, Under Eternity Blue explores other music that I find meaningful and satisfying - I do spend 80% or more of my time not listening to the Grateful Dead after all. This episode focuses on the Psychedelic Folk genre. It's an easy call that most Grateful Dead fans will find ...
The Stories Of Jerry Moore
4 June 2009, 2:14 pm
He Was A Friend Of MineI lived through the dawning of the Internet Age of Grateful Dead tape trading. I participated through our amazement that we could be so immediately in contact with other traders (by the thousands), all sharing lists and arranging trades instantaneously - so unlike "the good old days" - to the full explosion of high speed sharing which brought the real need for a trading community to its end. While living through all of that, I built up a cassette tape collection (then CD c...

GRATEFUL DEADSaturday, June 14, 1969Monterey Performing Arts Center - Monterey, CASoundboard RecordingMost all Deadheads are familiar with the 1969 “Live Dead” album. To a certain degree, this record represents a watershed moment in the band’s history, showcasing the true “live performance” magic of the Grateful Dead captured on vinyl. 1976 June 14 - Beacon Theater
20 May 2009, 8:22 pm
GRATEFUL DEADMonday, June 14, 1976Beacon Theater – New York, NYSoundboard RecordingJust as picking a show from the early 80’s can present a daunting task when it comes to knowing which way to turn first, June 1976 is like a microcosm of the same problem. The Grateful Dead played a lot of shows marking the inaugural run in the band’s return to the road as a touring act in '76. It seems that nearly the entire month of June has always circulated in good quality, and the shows can sort of ble...
Learning The Ropes To A Forgotten Trade
13 May 2009, 2:19 pm
Way back when, if you decided that you were going to collect Grateful Dead concert tapes, it wasn’t something that was extremely easy to do. Back in the days of analog music preservation, it was not all that common for someone to have two cassette decks, and having two decks was only the bare minimum required in the secret door knock that would get you into this club. It certainly didn’t stop there. Once inside, there were many feats of strength you had to perform in order to be granted a s...
Social Deadworking
6 May 2009, 6:20 pm
I find myself drawn to the way the world of online Social Networking and the Grateful Dead have been crossing paths of late. I work in the field of Internet Marketing, and thus have an interesting perspective to see both forces at play. Recently, there has been a good deal of buzz around the way folks are twittering set lists while attending the current Dead tour, and the ensuing shock and disgruntled opinions around how this “new age” of communication technology is stabbing the magic of the...

2 July 2009, 11:52 am
Blackdown: LDN011 Grievous Angel. (check this link for audio and full details) Two big tunes from my man Paul Meme coming out on Blackdown’s seminal Keysound label. Side A is a remix of Naphta’s Soundclash from the wicked “Long Time Burning” album. Flip is more abstract wonky business. Promo sounds fat as you like. Check. Clean living in difficult circumstances. Steven Wells RIP
25 June 2009, 4:25 am
Steven Wells AKA Susan Williams AKA Seething Wells has died. He was one of my favourite music journalists ever. People will scoff at this and remind me of Paul Morley or Greil Marcus or Lester Bangs or countless legendary articulate literary types. But I’ve never been all that literary. I always looked forward to Swells’ ranty swearing and pretension-busting championship [...]...

Hall & Oates' classic 80's pop track 'Out of Touch' gets remixed by Indiana's hardworking Action Jackson, giving it more of a 'B-More'-style backbone. The xx ←♥
16 May 2009, 11:35 am
New kids on the block The xx seem to be making quite a name for themselves after the release of Crystalised on 7". Their music is so good that it's almost sexual, making me wonder why there isn't a third X in their name, but jokes aside there is an incredible deep yearning quality which moves even the toughest of us.When listening to their music there seems to always be an underlying story or symbolism to it, as with Crystalised the eerie tones make us feel like we're in the calm before the stor...

Over the Christmas holidays last year, I ended up having a few long, quite amazing phone calls with Loefah. What was he inspired about? Kryptic Minds. On a cold January evening, Loefah suggested I come down to his studio, meet Si Kryptic Minds and talk about their plans for the Kryptic Minds album on Loefah's new label S...

Silkie - photo by Ashes57Even for a genre dominated by dubplates, 12"s and podcasts, my gut reaction tells me it will be a good year for dubstep or dubstep-affilated albums. With the Hyperdub album race underway (current front runner: Darkstar's, which I'm exceptionally excited about...) and Kryptic Minds' dark opus - not to mention a little something up my sleeve on Keysound, the album format may be about to hold its own this year. In this company comes a very strong contender for album of the ...

RCMP : Rave For Your Monday
15 June 2009, 11:03 am
Flamin’ Hotz/Young Robots just hit us up with RCMP’s latest single for our blogging pleasure, and boy is this track kinda amazing. Mostly rave, a little throw back disco, and all throw-your-hands-up-and-dance, “Ibizia, PA” is a perfect track to get your early week groove on. RCMP - “Ibiza, PA” (192) This serves as a promo for [...]...

11 June 2009, 2:13 pm
June 20, 9:30 PM, Manhattan we go hard: Resonator Magazine: you ain’t never had a friend like us. We’re kind of like that cool older brother or sister that tipped you off via mixtapes to music that was way ahead of its (and your) time, so that you got to walk around your [...]...
MANSION Back Again + Moar Resonator Parties
9 June 2009, 1:52 pm
Our good friends MANSION hit us up with another quality remix last night. Shit just keeps coming. Its a great indie turned house track, this time taking the infectious vocals of Australia’s Ah Horse and turning it into a driving dance floor groove; perfect dancefloor material right here. An Horse - Camp out (MANSION Remix) LINKS: An [...]...
Mashed Potato vs. Vampire
28 May 2009, 9:42 am
I’m sitting at The Tank, at 10:30 in the morning, dressed like some hot pink and black combination of The Eat Me / Beat Me Lady, Cindy Lauper, and, I’ll admit it, Avril Lavigne (who bit my style, not the other way around). Shaun and I are beside ourselves with excitment over tonight’s RES party, [...]...
Swirls of Midnight
20 May 2009, 11:26 am
Elizabeth Elkins is a singer-songwriter you call when you need to rock-and note, if you will, that there are two parts of this sentence that seem to contradict one another-”singer/songwriter” and “rock”. That’s merely one of many fascinating facets of the Atlanta-based Elkins, who, in addition to being front-woman for Resonator favorites ;The Swear (whose criminally [...]...

Nathan Vice
2 July 2009, 5:13 pm
I’ve been keeping tabs on Nathan Vice, the New Yorkian who’s been throwing down some fantastic tunes as of late. In particular he dropped his Bmore Disco Re-Edit of Earth, Wind & Fire’s mighty disco drenched classic Let’s Groove. Vice drops in the Daft Punk-esque filters, as we spiral in and out of the vocals and [...]...

vandal
2 July 2009, 8:51 am
In the breaks corner today we have Vandal with his epic new summer DJ mix. Knowing Vandal, it was never gonna be all sweetness and light… this is definitely one for the bass-keen, switching up between techno, rock and indie-electro influences. We recommend! Vandal makes his second appearance in Edinburgh at club Touch at the end [...]...
primal scream
1 July 2009, 10:30 am
Hands down one of my favourite bands ever, Primal Scream have been providing me with a constant reminder of my musical foundations for years. Beastie Boys, on the other hand, while I respect as a band – have surely created some of the most over-used acapellas in the music production / shoddy bootleg business. But sod [...]...

The Blogs Ask Digitalism
30 June 2009, 4:43 pm
Here are some questions that some top notch blogs (including us) posed to the fantastic electro duo that is Digitalism: 1. If you could have any artist (alive or dead) to collaborate with, who would it be? and why? Maybe Vincent van Gogh because his paintings are so beautiful. As for musicians — that’s hard to say. [...]...
Last Japan
30 June 2009, 10:21 am
Always had Last Japan down as a straight-up dubstep kind of guy (for some reason), but like all things these days, it’s all melting into one glorious hotchpotch of bass, dubstep, grime and house. This summer mix is going to get you ready for some mad summer parties. Get ready, here come’s the drop… Hey! (Last [...]...
Golden Gloves
30 June 2009, 9:42 am
Big tings coming from Golden Gloves, currently conducting a rave near you (if you live in Toronto that is). One half of the duo, Bennybumpdatshit, brings a history of hiphop production to the table, while his partner in crime, Cowiebunga, keeps things fresh with his live performance flair and passion for the dancefloor. This track really [...]...
